Improve Your Laser Drilling Results

New Piezo-Based Approach Enables Breakthrough Speed and Accuracy

Thanks to new generations of lasers, such as ultra-short lasers, laser drilling is increasingly becoming the method chosen for producing the smallest holes in a wide variety of materials at high throughput rates. However, in laser drilling, precision and speed are limited by a number of factors which include optical distortion, tracking accuracy, and acceleration limits of motion stages, as well as focus control performance. Common drilling methods such as trepanning and helical drilling therefore require accurate motion control to produce high-quality holes with the desired shape.

A variety of motion technologies is available for laser materials processing, in particular for laser drilling. Piezoelectric motors, for example, enable accurate positioning in the nanometer range while being able to manage complex motion profiles - a combination that many other drive technologies cannot achieve. Our white paper explains the various options when implementing a laser drilling system and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different drive technologies.
